KAREN BROOKS
As a Registered Nurse, it has been my calling to alleviate suffering, support healing and restore function in others. Although I have worked in many capacities over the years (see RESUME), four career scenarios have shaped who I am today.
In my early work as an in-patient psychiatric Team Leader, under the guidance of a brilliant and compassionate psychiatrist, I developed a ‘physicians command of psychiatric theory and practice’. This unique experience not only galvanized my passion for mental health work, it enabled me to deliver and coordinate expert clinical care to a large and diverse population of mentally ill patients.
As a Rehabilitation Consultant, I assisted insurance claimants, severely affected by motor vehicle trauma; to get the help they needed and get their lives back on track. I project managed complex cases to maximum medical and functional recovery as a critical liaison between claimants, insurers and legal representatives. This gave me a big picture view of the many elements affecting functional restoration.
Dispute Resolution training enabled me to separate substantive issues from emotional ones and illicit agreement within interpersonal conflict. This has been particularly useful when rooting out core vulnerabilities and restoring perspective in individuals struggling with intense psycho-emotional turmoil.
My career ideals ultimately culminated with “Wickwire and Brooks, Cognitive Behaviour Therapists”. For the past fifteen years, my friend and colleague, Kim Wickwire and I dedicated our efforts to the treatment of Anxiety Disorders and related conditions from our office in Toronto’s downtown core. We worked tirelessly with hundreds of complex cases and developed a reputation for getting results. We trained clinicians in ACT and CBT processes; presented at the OCD conference in Chicago, IL and developed a hospital based treatment guideline for OCD.
